Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro said Tuesday that he will only accept the G-7's offer of international aid to fight fires ravaging the Amazon rain forest if French president Emmanuel Macron first apologizes for insulting his handling of the crisis.“Before speaking or accepting anything from France, even if it comes from the best possible intentions, he must retract his words. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, has told Hizbollah’s leader to “calm down” after he said his movement was preparing a response within days to Israeli strikes.  Mr Netanyahu warned Hassan Nasrallah, secretary general of the Lebanese Shia group, to "be careful" with their words and actions. "I want to say to him and the Lebanese state, which is hosting this organisation that aims to destroy us, (...) Be careful about your words, and even more cautious about your actions,” he said on Tuesday. “He knows very well that the state of Israel knows how to defend itself well, and to repay its enemies.” Tensions between the two sides are more fraught than usual after Israel was accused of carrying out a drone attack on a Hizbollah facility in Beirut on Sunday and of striking an armed Palestinian faction in eastern Lebanon - its first such hostile action since the 2006 war. A war of words broke out between the presidents of France and Brazil as Emmanuel Macron responded angrily on Monday to Jair Bolsonaro’s “extraordinarily rude comments” about his wife Brigitte. Mr Bolsanaro appeared to endorse a Facebook comment posted by one of his supporters mocking Mr Macron, 41, for being married to a woman who is nearly 25 years his senior.  The comment suggested that Mr Macron was attacking Mr Bolsonaro over the Amazon fires because the Brazilian president was married to a much younger woman. “[Mr Bolsonaro] has made some extraordinarily rude comments about my wife,” Mr Macron said at a press conference. “What can I say? It’s sad for him, firstly, and for Brazilians … I think Brazilian women will probably be ashamed to read that from their president.” He added: “As I feel friendship and respect for the Brazilian people, I hope that they will very soon have a president who behaves in the right way.” The Facebook comments which the French president found offensive appeared below a picture of the Macrons beside one of Mr Bolsonaro, 64, and his wife Michelle, 37 years his junior. Ha ha.” Abraham Weintraub, Brazil’s education minister, joined the attack on Mr Macron on Sunday with a Twitter post calling him a “calhorda", a Portuguese term designating a rascal or a cretin. The row between Mr Macron and Mr Bolsonaro broke out over the French president’s attempt last week to put international pressure on Brazil to deal with vast fires that were raging unchecked in the Amazon. He threatened to block ratification of an ambitious free trade pact between the EU and the South American common market, Mercosur, until the fires were put out. Mr Bolsonaro, a far-Right climate sceptic, accused the centrist French president of having “a colonial mindset” and interfering in Brazil’s domestic affairs by declaring the fires to be a global emergency. Mr Macron retorted that Mr Bolsonaro had “lied” about his environmental commitments at the G20 summit in Japan in June. “President Bolsonaro has decided not to respect his commitments on the climate. nor to involve himself on the issue of biodiversity,” he said.

Donald Trump softened his tone on Monday on two of the most contentious issues at the strained G7 summit: his trade war with China and tensions with Iran. It was unclear if genuine progress had been made, but Mr Trump predicted a deal with China after it offered to return to the negotiating table, described by the US president as a breakthrough. “We’ll be getting back to the table,” he said.  He also appeared to back away from confrontation with Iran, leaving a window open for diplomacy. Boris Johnson met Scott Morrison, the Australian prime minister, on the sidelines of the summit to discuss a possible post-Brexit trade deal. After talks with Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, Mr Johnson said he would like to visit Japan “as soon as we’ve got Brexit done, which will be on October 31”. Leaders of the world’s major industrialised nations, meeting in the upmarket French coastal resort of Biarritz, have agreed to spend more than £16 million to put out the fires engulfing huge swathes of the Amazon rainforest. Mr Johnson pledged £10 million on Sunday to help protect and restore the Amazon. Emmanuel Macron, the French president, said he had a long discussion with Mr Trump on the fires and the US president backed the G7 initiatives, but Mr Trump was absent from a discussion on climate change with other leaders.  Mr Trump said he had agreed to the Iranian foreign minister’s surprise appearance on Sunday for talks with his French counterpart and Mr Macron, who is trying to broker a deal between Washington and Tehran. We're looking to make Iran rich again, let them be rich, let them do well, if they want.” Mr Trump said the G7 leaders shared the common goal of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. There is “great unity”, he said. “We’ve come to a conclusion, more or less.” “I knew everything he [Macron] was doing and I approved everything he was doing.” he said. “I said if you want to do that, that's OK. I don't consider that disrespectful at all. Especially when he asked me for approval.” Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, was less upbeat about the prospects of a diplomatic solution to the stand-off between Washington and Tehran. “We all have a big interest in a peaceful solution to the Iran situation, but it won’t be easy,” she said. The US administration imposed sanctions on Mr Zarif at the end of last month, part of Mr Trump’s policy of “maximum pressure” via crippling sanctions over Iran’s nuclear programme. Mr Trump pulled out of a 2015 international agreement placing limits on Tehran’s nuclear activities in return for trade and investment. Mr Macron decided to ditch the traditional joint communiqué at the end of the summit because of the gulf between the different leaders over issues ranging from China and Iran to the possible re-admission of Russia to the group,  advocated by Mr Trump but opposed by most of the other leaders including Mr Johnson and Mr Macron.  French officials had feared that Mr Trump, who has objected to the focus on the Amazon and climate change, could walk out or negate any progress with a caustic tweet after the close of the meeting. On Sunday, however, Mr Trump proclaimed that the meeting was going “beautifully”. Mr Macron and Mr Macron are to hold a joint press conference before the summit closes. It will be followed by Mr Johnson’s first formal press conference as prime minister.

Senator Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) encouraged the Trump administration to purchase Greenland in a New York Times op-ed published Monday, one week after the president publicly floated the idea to the consternation of his critics.In the piece, Cotton pushed back on presidential critics who have dismissed the notion of acquiring Greenland as a fantasy, pointing out that President Trump is following in the footsteps of previous American policymakers who were motivated by their belief that the acquisition would serve vital U.S. strategic interests.“In 1946, the Truman administration offered $100 million to Denmark to acquire Greenland, arguing that the island was ‘indispensable to the safety of the United States’ in confronting the growing Soviet threat, just as it had been in World War II when American forces used bases in Greenland to deter Nazi aggression,” Cotton writes.Cotton — who himself raised the prospect of purchasing Greenland during a meeting with the Danish ambassador last year — goes on to argue that the purchase would help deter Chinese expansion into the Arctic Circle, and weaken the Chinese monopoly on rare-earth minerals.“Beijing understands not only Greenland’s geographic importance but also its economic potential. Greenland is rich in a wide array of mineral deposits, including rare-earth minerals — resources critical to our high-tech and defense industries," Cotton writes after detailing China's failed efforts to establish military bases in Greenland. “China currently dominates the market in these minerals and has threatened to withhold them from us to gain leverage in trade negotiations. Greenland also possesses untold reserves of oil and natural gas.”Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen called President Trump's desire to purchase Greenland “absurd” last week after the president confirmed reports that he had discussed the possibility of making the purchase.“Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland,” Frederiksen told the Danish newspaper Sermitsiaq last Sunday. “I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously.”Trump cancelled a previously scheduled visit to Denmark in response to Frederiksen's comments.Greenland is a Danish territory with a population of 56,000 people who would, according to Cotton, benefit greatly from the economic resources that the U.S. could bring to bear on its relatively undeveloped territory.
